Joseph Martin, age 75, of Greenville, formerly of Chicago, passed away with family members at his side, in the early morning hours of Friday, November 14, 2014, at Metron of Belding Nursing Home following a long illness.  He was born on January 12, 1939 in Mackinaw City, Michigan, the son of William Robert and Estelle (Cyra) Martin, both of whom preceded him in death.  Joe graduated from Mackinaw City Schools and then joined the Army to serve his country as a Radio Operator near the end of the Korean War.  Following his military service, he became employed by Northwestern University, in Evanston, Illinois, where he worked as a Pastry Chef, retiring fifteen years ago with nearly thirty years of service.  After retiring, he moved to Greenville to enjoy a more rural setting where he could work in his gardens as much of the year as the weather would allow.  “Uncle Joe” as he was known to many had a great sense of humor, a thankful demeanor and a ready smile.  He enjoyed cooking and baking and would treat his neighbors and friends with the fruits of his labor on a regular basis.

There will be a Life Celebration Visitation on Tuesday, November 18, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding.  A luncheon will follow the gathering in the Community Room at the funeral home.  Those wishing to express their sympathy are welcomed to consider a contribution in Joe’s memory to Great Lakes Hospice or the activities program at Metron of Belding.  For additional information, please contact Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge St., Belding, at (616) 794-1300 or verdunfh.com, who is caring for the arrangements.
