Steven Earl Harrington, age 55, of Edmore, passed away following a long illness at Sheridan Community Hospital on Wednesday, November 4, 2015 with his dear wife and loving family by his side.  Steven was born January 28, 1960, the son of Fred Alan and Katherine Amelia (Helmreich) Harrington.  He graduated with the Class of 1978, from Elizabeth Ann Johnson Memorial High School in Mt. Morris, Michigan, where he was a celebrated member of the high school band.  He continued his education at Lansing Community College where he earned a certification in Criminal Justice.  Steve put that degree to work for many years for the Michigan Department of Corrections at the St. Louis Correctional Facility.  Steve married the love of his life, Margarete Luise Koos, at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Clio, Michigan on November 23, 1985.  He was a member of the NRA, loved spending time with his friends and family and was very proud to have become a grandfather for the first time, just a few weeks ago.  He will be fondly remembered for his incredible repertoire of jokes.   

 

In addition to his wife, Margarete, Steven is survived by his children Chelsea (John) Plesz of Rochester Hills, Michigan and Cody Harrington of St. James City, Florida; his new granddaughter, Madison Plesz; his parents, Fred and Kathy Harrington of Mt. Morris; sisters Jeanne DeMaertelure of Akron, Michigan and Molly (John) Woodward of St. James City, Florida; his amazing mother-in-law, Inge (Jerry McDiarmid) Koos of Rapid City, Michigan; brothers-in-law Ken Koos and Joe (Christine) Koos both of Big Rapids and John (Penny) Koos of White Cloud; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.  Steven was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Alan “Fritz” Harrington; his father-in-law, John Koos; and a brother-in-law, Raymond DeMaertelure.    

 

Steve’s family will  hold private memorial rites.  Those who know Steve’s license plate said “ATM DAD” will understand that the family is recommending donations to the college fund of his first grandchild in lieu of flowers.  To request a donation envelope or for additional information, please contact Verdun Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services at (616) 794-1300 or www.verdunfh.com.
