Larry G. “Dutch” Borgman, age 73, of Grattan, passed away at Spectrum Health – Butterworth Campus on Sunday, December 20, 2015.  He was born in Holland, Michigan on July 21, 1942, the son of Gerald Preston and Agnes Helen (VandenBosch) Borgman.  Larry graduated from Holland High School and continued his education at the Grand Rapids Police Academy and served on the Grand Rapids Police Force until his retirement in 1982, where his comrades fondly referred to him as “Borgie.”  He was among the first class of recruits trained in emergency services and also served on a rapid response team to assist those in need until an ambulance crew could arrive.  He met and married Sharon Ann Jerue, exchanging vows with her on March 5, 1966 in South Haven, Michigan.  Larry and Sharon owned and operated the Grattan Grocery Store for 14 years.  He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a regular with the morning coffee group at McDonalds in Belding.  Larry loved a good laugh and cherished family gatherings with his dear children and grandchildren whom he fiercely protected.  He attended Smyrna Bible Church for nearly 25 years, was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police and was a member of the Grattan Fire Department for many years, serving as Chief for several years.


Larry leaves to cherish his memory, his dear wife of 49 years, Sharon, his daughters, Beth (Jeff) Sondermayer of Beaverton, Oregon, Kim Vaughan of Grattan and Jen (Chad) Burns of Grattan; grandchildren, Kyle Borgman, Rebecca Sondermayer, Calie Burns, Alex Vaughan, Brady Burns and Nicholas Sondermayer; a sister, Mary Vorenkamp of Holland, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Agnes; his dear step-father, Mike Marlink; and his beloved son, Christopher Alan Borgman.


Visitation will take place on Tuesday, December 29, from

2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding.  A Funeral Service will take place at Smyrna Bible Church on Wednesday, December 30 at 11:00 a.m. with pastors Ron David and Darwyn Hassert officiating.  Interment will take place at Ashley Cemetery.  Those considering an expression of sympathy are welcomed to consider a memorial contribution in Larry’s memory to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or the building fund ad Smyrna Bible Church.  To request a donation envelope or for additional information, contact Verdun Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services at (616) 794-1300 or, who is caring for the arrangements.
