Kenneth Richard Walsh, age 86, Belding, formerly of Saranac, passed away Saturday afternoon, January 9, at Spectrum Health—United Memorial Hospital, with his dear wife, Raylene by his side.  Ken was born on February 23, 1929, in Ionia, Michigan, the son of Howard and Wavelet (Holland) Walsh.  He attended Ionia Schools, joined the Navy and received an Honorable Discharge in 1949.  He continued his education with college coursework and attended Trade and Technical schools in California to learn engineering.  He worked in several engineering capacities during his lifetime becoming well-known for his expertise in process engineering in production facilities.  He worked for Texas instruments in their jet engine design and manufacturing facility.  While working for Werner-Lahara (in the snack food industry), prior to retirement, he worked on many special projects to manufacture and convey food and confections, such as Goldfish crackers.  His work led to the development of several patents and took him to the Middle-East and all over the world to plan and design bakeries.  Ken married Raylene Magee on November 26, 1980 and she survives.  He also farmed, and raised and raced horses with his wife Raylene, celebrating with many champions in the winner’s circle.  He also enjoyed any and all outdoor activities.  He had a woodworking shop for many years and worked on projects for around the house and crafts which he and Raylene sold at craft shows.   Ken enjoyed skeet shooting and belonged to a local gun club, enjoyed grilling out with family and friends, deeply cherished spending time with the children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.   And like any true Irishman, Ken loved a good joke and enjoyed a little drama in his life.

The memory of Ken will be cherished by his dear wife Raylene, of Belding, three children from his first marriage; Raylene’s daughters, Renee (Pete Soyka) Magee of Belding and Rashelle Headley of Greenville, whom he treated like they were his own; grandchildren Jason (Mara) Walling, Devin Eldred, Jr., Kara (Charles) Horvath and Kendra Kay Ruperd; great grandchildren, Lilyanna, Madison, Khloe Kay, Harper Grace, Andrew and Kayson Kenneth with another granddaughter due on February 22.  He was preceded in death by his parents and a child from his first marriage.

To honor Ken’s wishes, Cremation has taken place and there will be no service at this time.  The family is planning a private memorial service this summer at the river.  For additional information please contact Verdun Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Belding at (616) 794-1300 or at
