Virtue D. (DeGraw) Mehney, age 95, of Belding passed away at home, on March 16, under the care of her loving family and hospice, following a long illness.  She was born on December 30, 1920, in Alma, Michigan, the daughter of Harry and Henrietta (Bowen) DeGraw.  She graduated from Alma High School with the Class of 1938, and continued her education at Grand Rapids Community College where she studied Real Estate.  She worked in the accounting department at Gibsons and for the Department of Human Services in Stanton.  She married Jack LaVerne Mehney on June 16, 1945, and he preceded her in death in 1985.  While raising her family, Virtue kept very busy with volunteer and community activities including her 50 year membership in the Good Fellowship Club, her Washington Club membership, serving as President of the Ladies Literary Club, being a founding member of the Friends of the Alvah N. Belding Library, her involvement over the years in the Order of the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron of Doric Chapter #75, in Belding and ushering in change by serving as the first woman Council Person for the City of Belding.  She will be remembered by many for her faithful membership at First Congregational Church of Belding.  Virtue was an independent person, with a keen attention to details, living on her own well into her nineties.

The memory of Virtue will be cherished by her dear family including children, Sue Ellen (Michael) McClurg of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Robert Glenn (Janice) Mehney of Belding and Janis Patricia (Glen) Ackley of Gowen; grandchildren Glen Joseph (Tracey) Ackley, Christopher Ackley, Shauna (Troy) Thompson, Judith (Scott) Mantyla and Erika Mehney; great grandchildren Raelyn, Kendal, Avery, Julia, Elizabeth, Chase, and Hunter.  In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and six siblings and a son-in-law, Douglas MacAllister.

Visitation will take place on Sunday, March 20, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding, followed by an Eastern Star Service.  Pastor Paul Hulford will officiate the Funeral Service on Monday, March 21, at 11:00 a.m. at First Congregational Church of Belding.  Private interment next to her husband, Jack, will take place at Rest Haven Memory Gardens.  Those wishing to express sympathy are welcomed to consider a memorial contribution in Virtue’s memory to Alvah N. Belding Memorial Library or the Belding Museum.  Envelopes will be available at the services or by contacting Verdun Family Funeral Home at (616) 794-1300 or www.verdunfh.com, who has been entrusted with the arrangements.
