Bonnie Jean (McConnell) Holmes, age 79, of Belding, passed away at home under the care of hospice and her loving family on Wednesday, March 23, 2016, following a battle with cancer.  She was born on June 26, 1936, in Risco, Missouri, the daughter of Elva E. and Gertrude E. (Markle) McConnell.  She graduated from Risco High School and continued her education at Arkansas State University.  She married Charles Curtis “Curt” Holmes on August 30, 1957, in Tallapoosa, Missouri, and shared 58 years of marriage with him.  Bonnie worked in several capacities during her lifetime including keeping children safe as a Bus Monitor for Belding Schools.  Even while working outside the home, her true love was caring for her husband and family. In keeping with that commitment to family, she welcomed several family members into their home over the years to care for them during illnesses. She was a member of Green Corner Baptist Church and had a close relationship with her Lord and Savior, quoting scripture and praying frequently, even as her health failed.  Bonnie had a great sense of humor and a treasure trove of sayings and tid-bits of advice that she delivered with a southern drawl and a gleam in her Irish eyes.  She had many dear friends and will be missed by all who knew her.

She leaves her loving family to cherish her memory including her husband Curt of Belding; children Charles K. “Chuck” (Paula) Holmes of Shelby Township, Michigan and Ellen (David) Dakin of Greenville; grandchildren, Shaun (Jamie) Holmes, Colleen (Bryan) Adams, Meagan (Tom Jessop) Holmes, Laura (Sean) Canham and Rebecca (Aaron Caverley) Dakin; great grandchildren Brayden and Addelyn; special “grandchildren” who she took in as her own, Grace and Jack Verdun; and several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, James McConnell and Elva McConnell, Jr., and a sister, Mary Ann, who died in infancy.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 28, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge St., Belding, Michigan.  Bonnie’s Funeral Service will take place at the Green Corners Baptist Church, 4998 Belding Road, Belding, Michigan, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 29, with Pastor Paul Leslie officiating, and a Eulogy offered by Fr. Darrel Kempf.   Private Interment Services will take place at River Ridge Cemetery in Belding.  Memorial contributions are recommended to the Youth Programs at Green Corners Baptist Church.  Memorial envelopes and additional information will be available at the services or by contacting Verdun Family Funeral Home at (616) 794-1300 or www.verdunfh.com.
