LaVerna (Christiansen) Mathewson, age 78, of Belding, entered the presence of her Lord and Savior early Monday morning, September 9, 2019, when she passed away at home, under the care of her loving family and hospice. She was born at home in Douglas Township, near Entrican, in Montcalm County, Michigan, on August 24, 1941, the daughter of Clarence and Myrtle (Slocum) Christiansen, both of whom preceded her in death. LaVerna attended Belding Schools and enjoys celebrating at the reunions with the Class of 1961. She married Cecil Mathewson on August 16, 1958, and shared 61 years of marriage with him. LaVerna’s primary focus was caring for her family and managing a tidy and efficient home. She took great pride in laundry and other tasks which were always done right when she was in charge of them. She also worked outside the home as a cook for Belding Schools for more than 15 years. LaVerna enjoyed daytime television, sewing, camping and spending as much time as she could with her family, especially those precious grandchildren. She was a faith-filled person and has been a member of First United Church of God in Walker for more than 20 years.
In addition to her dear husband, Cecil, LaVerna leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Janet (Timothy) Heffron, Howard (Valerie) Mathewson, Norman (Tina) Mathewson all of Belding and Dawn (Chad) Hengesbach of Westphalia; grandchildren James (Jassica), Brendan, Maura (Kenny), Ashlyn, Lauren, Johanna, Christian (Aylizza), Mikayla, Kyle, Maria, Tyler, Kierian, Brooklyn, Autumn, Addison and Landon; 14 great grand children; siblings, Arthur Annis, Richard (Jackie) Christiansen, Clarence (MaryLou) Christian and Roger (Twyla) Christiansen; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Virgil Mathewson, Virginia (Bob) Smalley, Marjorie Stockton, Dorothy Mrozovick and Monica Mathewson; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, brothers- and sisters-in-law, Hiram Annis, Louis Annis, Leroy Annis, Jean Annis, Rex & Marsha Mathewson, Lyle Mathewson, Ski Mrozovick and James Stockton.
