Susan Ann Meagher

Susan Ann (Shawley) Meagher, age 67, of Belding, passed away early Monday morning, July 26, 2021, at SKLD Medical residence in Ionia, following a long illness. “Susi” was born in Greenville, Michigan, on September 16, 1953, daughter of Wilford R. and Othela M. (Coleman) Shawley, both of whom preceded her in death. She graduated from Belding High school and then continued her education at Hillsdale College, later transferring to Grand Valley State University where she completed her Bachelors-Degree in Education. Susi taught at Belding Schools from 1992 until her retirement in 2014. She had many pastimes and interests through the years including quilting and photography. She had several passions as well, one of which was travel. Just after earning her degree, she, along with another teacher she knew, ventured to Mexico to teach a six-week summer program. She and her sister, traveled to Israel, Egypt, Japan and several places in Europe. She was also passionate about Sphynx cats, raising and caring for many of them in her home, along with her dog. Among several other worthy causes, Susi was active in the community, serving as a member of the Ionia County Community Mental Health Board, also known as “The Right Door.” She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church for many years where she enjoyed sharing her gift and love of singing.

Susi will be remembered and missed by her dear sister, Deborah J. McPeek-McFadden of Belding; and aunt, Jeanette Strouse of Clare; and several cousins and many great friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Collin; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding. A celebration of Life Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 19, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 422 W. High Street, Belding. Private Interment will take place.
